Via Matias

Pottery Studio Director

Via Matias is a traveling studio and multimedia artist currently based in Cincinnati, OH. She was born and raised in Tucson, Arizona by her mother, a painter, and her father, a writer. Her work is informed by the daily reality that is time-travel, the dreamlike state of world-travel, and the lifelong condition that is consciousness experimentation. While previous works explored the melancholy organism of domesticated humanity with a sort of blasé optimism, in 2016 she gave birth to her first child and sought to reform her artistic practice in a spirit of awakening gratitude.  She began studying ceramics in 2018 with potter Catherine Orrantia, taking an interest in primitive pottery  techniques as well as contemporary ceramic art. She enjoys sharing clay with others who seek its redemptive qualities.

Via began working with BLOC in November 2019 as the Pottery Studio Director.  She views her role as Pottery Studio Director the way that a film director would - "We've had the vision, now let's have some fun".  Via creates an auspicious and inspiring environment where folks can get centered and tap into the creative power that is their birthright. She is designing a studio that is educational and playful, where any person would feel welcome. While all aspects of a technical ceramics lab are present, she also designs spaces in the studio for play. A cumulative mural wall, a Montessori-style activity center, a gallery space, and a community creations board are current manifestations in-the-works.

Seeing someone's eyes light up when they realize what is possible with clay is a beautiful thing.  Clay is an ego-less identity; it is making mud pies as a child, being totally present with one's hands in the earth. It is both humbling and empowering. One must have conviction to work with this medium, but ultimately relinquish all attachment, as the clay does what it will.  Via would love to see the pottery studio develop into a co-operative space, with participants taking ownership of the studio and becoming one consciously empowered community.

"You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye." - Matthew 7:5
